Stroke ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary receives £1,500 donation from national housebuilder

Members of Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s specialist stroke ward have welcomed a £1,567 donation from national housebuilder Persimmon.

The donation was presented by Persimmon Managing Director, Matthew Barker, and Trainee Sales Advisor, Francesca Scholes and welcomed by the ward’s Matron, Jane Briggs, and members of the Ward 16 staff in the presence of Councillor Nigel Ball.

Francesca’s Grandad was treated at Ward 16 last year after suffering a stroke. He sadly passed away, but Francesca was touched by the amazing commitment, care and support offered by the staff at the hospital.

She said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Ward 16, not only did they support my grandad but also my whole family during a difficult time and we are all incredibly grateful.”

As such, Francesca organised a bake sale at her office in honour of her grandad who was a keen baker, with all proceeds going to Ward 16.

She continued: “I know that they will provide fantastic support to so many more families and patients in the future, and I hope our donation goes some way to helping those efforts.”

When discussing the charity bake sale with her Managing Director, it was agreed that Persimmon would supplement the funds with a £1,000 donation from their Community Champions scheme.

Jane Briggs said: “Thank you so much to Francesca and the team at Persimmon Homes for the very kind and generous donation to the Hyper Acute Stroke unit at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

“A special thank you goes to Francesca for organising the bake sale and raising funds in memory of her beloved Grandad.

“I am very proud of the team on the stroke unit and the work they do, they really do go above and beyond in providing excellent care and support to stroke patients and their families.

“This kind donation is a reflection of the work they do and it is very much appreciated and heart-warming to receive a donation in memory of a special gentleman. Thank you.”

Councillor Nigel Ball, Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Communities, Leisure and Culture, said: “It’s great to see Ward 16 at Doncaster Royal Infirmary receive this donation, support, and recognition today.

“All the staff and doctors provide ongoing and vital work to help patients recover from the effects of a stroke and support families and friends coming to terms with the effect of a stroke. This is paramount for everyone to aid understanding and recovery.

“The funds donated by Persimmon from their Community Champions initiative and the bake sale proceeds will certainly go a long way.”

Matthew Barker, Managing Director at Persimmon South Yorkshire, said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Doncaster Royal Infirmary, and in particular their specialist stroke unit, Ward 16.

“They are a fantastic organisation who provide vital care to people all over our region, and I wish them all the very best in the future.”

Donations made by supporters of the Trust help staff go above and beyond by funding improvements to patient services, staff health and wellbeing initiatives, state of the art equipment and more.
