Charity marathon runner bakes her way towards £2,000 fundraising goal

The first-ever London Marathon runner for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) Charity has raised £1,100 following a 2-day bake sale and several mini challenges.

Inta Umure, a GXO-employee from Rotherham has pledged to raise £2,000 for DBTH Charity, funds which will contribute to the creation of a sensory room within the Children’s Ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Following a competitive selection process, Inta was the chosen runner for the charity, having committed to the highest fundraising target of all those who applied for the spot.

Inta said: “This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and finishing a marathon has always been one of my goals.”

To reach her £2,000 goal, Inta found several creative and community-oriented ways to raise funds.

Starting in early February, Inta took on a series of mini challenges, including the Ice Bucket challenge and eating salted insects and intensely sour sweets.

At the start of April, she hosted a 2-day, extravagant bake sale, raising £282.60.

Inta said: “I couldn’t have done it without all the amazing colleagues who baked so many beautiful and delicious cakes.”

Inta has been training hard, running between 7-15 kilometres, five days a week.

On the weekend, she completes her ‘long run’ – with her latest being 36km.

Speaking about the marathon this weekend, Inta said: “The excitement I have for Sunday is absolutely through the roof now.

“I can’t wait to be there and soak up all the energy.”

Inta will continue her fundraising down south, taking QR codes which link to her page and asking for further support from participants and members of the crowd.

In a touching tribute, Sarah Dunning, Fundraising Manager for DBTH Charity, said to Inta: “It’s because of people like you that we’re able to do the wonderful things we do.

“Thank you so much to you and all your incredible donors who have contributed so far. You are all our heroes!”
